The Stoke Bridge viewing platform looking towards Ipswich Waterfront is to be improved by Ipswich Central, thanks to £125,000 in funding from Suffolk County Council’s Ipswich Investment Fund.
The project, one of the components of Ipswich Central’s ‘People,
Place, Purpose’ business plan for the town, will see an upgrade to the existing
viewing area for residents and visitors, new seating, planting, and new permanent heritage
interpretation boards. Visitors will also be able to enjoy digital content,
thanks to a new online platform offering the same harbour view of
different periods in history, plus information about the waterfront as it is
today, with links to the businesses and organisations.
The digital content and imagery for the new project will be carefully researched in collaboration with experts involved in the Thomas Wolsey 550 project, Ipswich Maritime Trust, The Ipswich Society, and other heritage organisations in the town.
Terry Baxter, Chair of
Ipswich Central, said: “We are extremely pleased that
our vision for the Stoke Bridge project, another of
our business plan pledges for the town, will happen thanks to PDP Investment Funding
from Suffolk County Council. Stoke Bridge is a key location for the town, an important historic
landmark and point of welcome for visitors to Ipswich Waterfront. Our plans for this area will elevate the
existing view, celebrate Ipswich’s heritage harbour and support the
regeneration of St Peter’s Dock and the new Heritage Action Zone in the town.”
