The New 12 Sided £1 Coin

The Royal Mint has released the new 12 sided £1 coin as legal tender from today. With it's 12 sided, bimetallic look, a resemblance of the £2 coin brought in a few years ago, it includes a hidden security feature which will make it incredibly difficult to counterfeit. The new design features the English rose, the Welsh leek, the Scottish thistle and the Northern Irish shamrock emerging from one stem within a royal coronet, with the design created by David Pearce who won a public design competition at the age of 15. Businesses handling cash have been informed to prepare for the new introduction, with many having upgraded their machine to accept the new coin. The current round look coin's legal tender will be withdrawn on 15th October. From this date shops will no longer accept the coins but you will still be able to take them to a bank.
