A large interactive art sculpture will be in place on the Cornhill in the heart of Ipswich town centre on Monday 2 March 2026 for two weeks, thanks to Ipswich Central, the business improvement district for the town centre.
The In Bloom sculpture was famously at Battersea Power Station in London in early 2025, Canary Wharf during January 2026 and Cambridge in February 2026 and will be in Ipswich for two weeks from Monday 2 March until 16 March 2026.
Established in 2024, In Bloom was designed and created by Kumquat Lab in Edinburgh with Creative Scotland. It is a light and sound sculpture and fun interactive piece of art that you can watch, play and listen to. Inspired by the process of flower pollination, In Bloom is a large plant-shaped sculpture and immersive experience that children and adults can enjoy together.
The artwork offers an open-ended, sensory experience that encourages curiosity and connection, and seeks to draw a parallel between nectar, essential to pollinators’ survival, and music, a source of spiritual nourishment for both humans and insects alike.
Colourful glowing spheres represent the plant’s flowers and touching them produces musical notes: an interaction inspired by the flight of pollinators as they move from flower to flower. The sculpture encourages a collaborative approach to music-making, offering an opportunity to explore rhythm and melody together as a unique musical experience with the power of touch.
The sculpture advocates for a collective approach to music, allowing everyone to express their creativity as one. Through its playful interactivity, In Bloom also emphasises the vital role of pollinators in our ecosystems. The whole experience invites reflection, interconnectedness and the importance of nurturing biodiversity.
Lee Walker, Chief Executive Officer at Ipswich Central, says: “As we enter spring and flowers start to appear, having the In Bloom installation in Ipswich Town Centre is the perfect reminder of colour and life, sound and music lifting the community.
“Having visited the art installation in London, it’s amazing that we could bring it to Ipswich for all to enjoy. Thank you, Kumquat Lab, for not only creating this amazing piece but also for sharing it with the town and to Ipswich Borough Council for all the help in making this possible.”
Sebastien Guillen, who with Tom founded Kumquat Labs in 2021, adds: “We’re delighted to bring In Bloom to Ipswich Cornhill. What people often respond to most is its immediacy: the simple joy of creating something together, regardless of age or background. Through play, we hope the work sparks moments of connection while highlighting the importance of nurturing our environment.”
